Ashtanga Hrudaya Su.2 – Dinacharya Adhyaya

Need of waking up before sunrise –

ब्राह्मे मुहूर्त उत्तिष्ठेत्स्वस्थो रक्षार्थमायुषः| (AH.Su.2)

  • One should wake up early in the morning at “Brahma Muhurtha” i.e. one Muhurta before the sunrise. Brahma is knowledge, which is gained by reading. So, early morning time is ideal for gaining of the knowledge.
  • Early morning hours can be clean without pollution with clean sir, pleasant atmosphere, absence of noise, which is beneficial for health.

Importance of Shaucha Vidhi –

शरीरचिन्तां निर्वर्त्य कृतशौचविधिस्ततः|| (AH.Su.2)
One should excrete the urine and faeces only after getting the urge to evacuate. Do not force the Vega, which can lead to various diseases.

  • Importance & contraindication of brushing (Dantadhavana) –
    Dantadhavana Vidhi:
    प्रातर्भुक्त्वा च मृद्वग्रं कषायकटुतिक्तकम्||
    कनीन्यग्रसमस्थौल्यं प्रगुणं द्वादशाङ्गुलम्|
    भक्षयेद्दन्तपवनं दन्तमांसान्यबाधयन्|| (AH.Su.2)
    • One should brush teeth two times – early morning & after eating.
    • The twig of brush should be 12 Angula in length (द्वादशाङ्गुलम्), thickness of circumference of little finger (कनीन्यग्रसमस्थौल्यं), tip should be soft (Mrudu), without injuring gums (Danta-Mamsa) (दन्तमांसान्यबाधयन्), consists of Kashaya, Katu & Tikta Rasa.

Herbs used for Dantadhavana:
अर्कन्यग्रोधखदिरकरञ्जककुभादिजम्| (AH.Su.2)
Twigs of following herbs are used for Dantadhavana :

    1. Arka
    2. Nyagrodha
    3. Khadira
    4. Karanja
    5. Kakubha

Contraindications of Dantadhavana:
नाद्यादजीर्णवमथुश्वासकासज्वरार्दिती|
तृष्णास्यपाकहृन्नेत्रशिरःकर्णामयी च तत्|| (AH.Su.2)
Contraindications for brushing are as followes:

    • Ajirna – Indigestion
    • Vamathu – vomiting
    • Shwasa – difficulty in breathing/ dyspnoea
    • Kasa – Cough
    • Jwara – fever
    • Ardita – Facial paralysis
    • Trushna – thirst
    • Aasyapak – stomatitis
    • Hrudamaya – Heart disease
    • Netramaya – Eye diseases
    • Shira-amaya – diseases of head
    • Karnamaya – ear diseases
  • Difference between Sauviranjana & Rasanjana –
    सौवीरमञ्जनं नित्यं हितमक्ष्णोस्ततो भजेत्|
    चक्षुस्तेजोमयं तस्य विशेषात् श्लेष्मतो भयम्||
    योजयेत्सप्तरात्रेऽस्मात्स्रावणार्थं रसाञ्जनम्| (AH.Su.2)
    • Eyes are dominant of Agni Mahabhuta, hence all precautions should be taken to avoid vitiation of Kapha Dosha at location of eyes.
    • Sauviranjana – a type of collyrium which is beneficial to eyes & should be applied daily (नित्यं).
    • Rasanjana – another type of collyrium which should be applied once in a week (सप्तरात्रे) for drain out or secrete Kapha from eyes.
  • Contraindications of betel leaf consumption (Tambula) –
    ताम्बूलं क्षतपित्तास्ररूक्षोत्कुपितचक्षुषाम्|
    विषमूर्च्छामदार्तानामपथ्यं शोषिणामपि|| (AH.Su.2)
    Contraindication of Tambula are as follows:
    • Kshata – injury/ wound
    • Pittasra – bleeding disorders
    • Ruksha – dryness
    • Utkupita Chakshu – Eyes diseases
    • Visha – poisoning
    • Murchha – syncope
    • Madarta – alcoholic intoxications
    • Shosha – emaciation
  • Concept of Abhyanga along with contraindications –
    Benefits of Abhyanga:
    अभ्यङ्गमाचरेन्नित्यं, स जराश्रमवातहा|
    दृष्टिप्रसादपुष्ट्यायुःस्वप्नसुत्वक्त्वदार्ढ्यकृत्|| (AH.Su.2)
    • जराश्रमवातहा – Delays aging, gives relief from tiredness & pacifies Vata disorders
    • दृष्टिप्रसाद – Improves vision
    • पुष्ट्यायुः – Gives nourishment to body & prolongs lifespan
    • स्वप्नकृत् – Produces adequate sleep
    • त्वक्कृत् – Improves skin
    • दार्ढ्यकृत् – Improves muscular tone of body

शिरःश्रवणपादेषु तं विशेषेण शीलयेत्| (AH.Su.2)
Abhyanga should be done specifically at following parts:

    • Shira (head)
    • Shravana (ears)
    • Pada (Soles)

Contraindications of Abhyanga:
वर्ज्योऽभ्यङ्गः कफग्रस्तकृतसंशुद्ध्यजीर्णिभिः|| (AH.Su.2)

    • कफग्रस्त – aggravated Kapha in body
    • कृतसंशुद्ध – person who has done Vamana or Virechana
    • अजीर्णि – indigestion
